What Does a Facelift Really Do?

The facelift is an increasingly popular procedure for patients 65 and older, but what exactly does it do to help with signs of aging? Let’s break down your biggest questions about the facelift so you know exactly what you’re getting into before your consultation, starting with what exactly a facelift is.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that we recommend to patients who suffer from sagging facial skin, displaced fat, weak facial muscles and severe signs of aging. With a facelift, the muscles along the mid-face are tightened and the skin is pulled tight to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The facelift is often performed with a combination of other procedures including blepharoplasty, a brow lift, or minimally invasive dermal fillers and injectables. This is mainly because the facelift mainly affects the lower two-thirds of the face, so it’s not a complete one-and-done solution to reduce signs of aging.

How is a Facelift Performed?

During your facelift, a series of incisions are made starting at your hairline and extending behind your ears. Through these incisions, Dr. Richard Martin is able to strengthen facial muscles, remove fatty deposits from the face, reposition facial tissue and trim away any excess skin. The whole procedure is performed in about two to four hours, depending on the condition of your face pre-surgery.

When Should You Get a Facelift?

The time at which a patient should get a facelift is one of the most popular questions we receive. Realistically, there is no right answer to this question. We’ve seen patients get a facelift at 45-years-old and others at 75-years-old. The biggest factor to look at when considering a facelift is whether you suffer from advanced signs of aging and are looking for a long-term solution.

How Long Does a Facelift Last?

Although how long the results of your facelift last will depend on your body’s natural aging process, we find the results of a facelift have the potential to last you a lifetime. We recommend regular MedSpa treatments, like RF microneedling, after your procedure to help you maintain the results of your facelift. You’ll be able to start seeing the full results of your facelift after all of your swelling goes down, which can take up to six months. However, our patients have reported being able to see dramatic improvements in their appearance in as little as three weeks post-treatment.
