Hollywood stars have long influenced our society’s views on beauty. So when teens go looking for answers to their body issues it is very common that they look to the celebrities who they admire. Especially today with the rapid growth of social media, Hollywood stars are more accessible than ever – and their lives are an open book. Hollywood stars have made plastic surgery more socially acceptable and desirable. With more celebrities openly sharing the procedures they’ve undergone, more and more teens are lining up to do the same. But are these teens ready for plastic surgery?

Is Your Teen Ready for Cosmetic Surgery?

Teenagers younger than 18 years of age require parental consent for all plastic surgery procedures. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) advises parents to seek the guidance of a board certified plastic surgeon and to evaluate their teenager’s physical and emotional maturity. Plastic surgery is not recommended for teens who are prone to mood swings or erratic behavior, who are abusing drugs or alcohol, or who are being treated for clinical depression or other mental illness. The best outcomes can be expected when:

  • He or she initiates the request. The teen must clearly and repeatedly express his or her own desire for plastic surgery.
  • He or she has realistic goals. The teen must avoid any unrealistic expectations about life changes that will occur as a result of the procedure.
  • He or she has sufficient maturity. They must be able to tolerate the discomfort and temporary disfigurement of a surgical procedure.

Common Plastic Surgery Procedures for Teenagers

Protruding ears can be difficult for a teenager to endure. It is not uncommon for teenagers to have ear surgery when their ears stick out too far or are too large for their head. Also called otoplasty, this procedure pins back the ears. It can be a big boost for a teenager’s self-confidence.

Rhinoplasty or nose reshaping is not performed until the nose has reached its adult size. This occurs at age 15 or 16 for girls and around age 17 for boys. In this surgical procedure, the nose is reshaped or repaired by removing or reshaping bone or cartilage. This procedure can help bring proportion to the rest of the face.

Many teenagers suffer from acne and as a result struggle with issues of self-confidence. So it stands to reason that another popular procedure for teenagers is acne treatments. By delving into the pores to remove the dirt and bacteria that causes pimples, acne treatments clean the skin. These treatments can range from topical solutions and oral medications to laser therapy including skin resurfacing for acne scar removal.
