Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

Getting the flat tummy and washboard abs you see in the magazines isn’t as easy as it looks. Sometimes, even with the healthiest diet and regular exercise, stubborn fat and loose skin won’t budge to give you the look you desire. When considering cosmetic surgery for a tiny waist, two procedures always come to mind. Here’s what you need to know about liposuction and the tummy tuck, and what each of them can do for your midsection, so you can choose which procedure is right for you.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure in which stubborn fatty deposits are gently sucked from the body using a hollow tube, called a cannula, hooked up to a vacuum-powered system. Once the fat cells are removed from the body, they do not grow back. This means your results have the potential to last a lifetime with the proper diet and a good exercise routine. A good thing to keep in mind about your liposuction treatment is that liposuction is designed specifically to target the fat in your treated area, but does not do anything to tighten any loose or hanging skin.

What are the Benefits of Liposuction?

There are many benefits to getting liposuction done at Connecticut Surgical Arts, including:

  • Stubborn pockets of fat are permanently removed from the treated area.
  • Liposuction can be used to treat any area with excess fat, not just the abdominal region.
  • Liposuction helps patients within 30lbs of their ultimate goal weight finally lose that excess fat.
  • Lipo can also be done in combination with other procedures to produce ultimate results.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a surgical cosmetic procedure in which excess, loose skin is removed from the abdominal area to produce a tighter, flatter tummy. During a tummy tuck, an incision is made from hip to hip just above the pubic area. Through this incision, Dr. Martin is able to tighten the abdominal muscles, stretch the skin tight over the muscles, then trim away any excess skin and tissue from the area. The tummy tuck alone is specifically targeted to treat the loose and hanging skin around the abdomen and does not target areas of excess fat in the treated area.

What are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

Benefits of getting a tummy tuck at Connecticut Surgical Arts include:

  • Tummy tucks are designed to remove loose or hanging skin around the abdomen.
  • The tummy tuck scar is hidden under the bikini line.
  • A tummy tuck produces stronger abdominal muscles and tighter skin along the tummy.
  • Tummy tucks can be done in combination with other procedures to produce ultimate results.

Is Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck Right for Me?

The best body sculpting procedure for you is based on what you would like to have treated. If you’re more concerned about ridding your body of excess stubborn fat, liposuction is your way to go. If you’re only concerned about loose skin around your abdomen, the tummy tuck is your best option. That being said, if you’re concerned about a little bit of both, consider getting both procedures done at the same time! We recommend patients get both a tummy tuck and liposuction to create the ultimate sculpted look. Don’t underestimate the power of two!
