Many patients focus on the immense benefits of a rhinoplasty procedure, and often forget to consider the amount of recovery time required after surgery. Although most of the swelling from a rhinoplasty procedure resolves in a month or two, it can take as long as a year for full recovery and for the final results to be visible. Below, we’ll look at some other factors you’ll also need to consider.
Open Rhinoplasty vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
An open rhinoplasty involves an incision at the base of the nose, which typically requires a longer healing process than a closed rhinoplasty – a technique that only requires incisions inside the nose. Keep in mind that an open rhinoplasty ofen causes more swelling, which can cause a delay in your initial results and may add time to your full recovery process.
Rhinoplasty Recovery with a Cast
If your rhinoplasty involved the breakage of nasal bones, you’ll likely have a cast following your procedure. After wearing this cast for about a week, you’ll need to remove it very carefully and continue communicating with your surgeon as your recovery progresses. Don’t be concerned if there is significant swelling! The cast is designed to hold your nasal bones in place and ensure optimal results, not reduce swelling.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Tips
To ensure a smooth recovery process following your rhinoplasty, here are some tips to aid your recovery:
- Rest as much as possible in the weeks following treatment. Too much activity can create additional swelling!
- Keep your head elevated and ice your nose on a daily basis. If you don’t see any improvements, try taking pictures! This can help you track your recovery and notice the gradual improvements.
- Talk to your surgeon if you notice anything unusual or have any questions. They’re there to help!
