Healthy Habits After Liposuction

Liposuction in Norwich, CTIf you have areas of fat on your body that simply won’t respond to diet and exercise, then liposuction could be the answer. This cosmetic procedure removes these difficult fat cells from the body to give you the definition you’ve been wanting.

Your Liposuction Recovery

After liposuction, recovery occurs gradually. Usually, you can return to work in three to five days, wearing a snug elastic garment to help the skin re-drape the underlying muscle. You may be required to wear compression garments for up to three weeks.

Here are a few tips to help you in your recovery.

  • Have someone with you to help you. This person should accompany you on the day of the surgery and also be with you at least for the following day. During this time is important that you rest so that your body can heal. This person should be able to drive you around and to perform any heavy activities during your normal routine.
  • Limit your activity. It is best to minimize excessive movement after surgery to help you recover quicker. You should not engage in strenuous activities like exercise and heavy lifting.
  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or anti-inflammatory medications. These medications are not good pain relievers following liposuction. That’s because they may increase your risk of bleeding. These medications can also weaken your body’s immune system by impairing white blood cells. To be safe, avoid taking these medications.
  • Wear your compression garments. After your liposuction procedure, you will notice some loose skin in the area where fat has been removed. The compression garments apply pressure to the skin and tighten it, helping to reduce excessive swelling and bruising.
  • Do not smoke or drink while you are in recovery. Alcoholic beverages will interfere with some of the medications you will take during your recovery. They may also cause bleeding. Smoking must be avoided for at least two weeks. Nicotine can hasten the rate of skin healing, which may eventually result in permanent scarring. Smoking can also cause the patient to cough, which can cause unwanted bleeding.
