Botox® Basics in Norwich, CT

Lines and wrinkles in the face are an inescapable side effect of aging. While some may choose to accept this sign of aging gracefully, others may be self-conscious about their wrinkles and seek cosmetic treatment to achieve a more youthful appearance. One popular treatment taking the cosmetic world by storm is the injectable Botox®. While the idea of a facial injection may seem daunting, we’ve compiled some information on the basics of Botox® to make you more comfortable with the treatment.

What Is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable treatment made from a neurotoxin named botulinum toxin. When injected into the face, the Botox® formula blocks nerve signals that cause the facial muscles to contract. These muscle contractions are largely responsible for the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. After the muscles are treated with Botox®, they are in a relaxed state, reducing the appearance of wrinkles in the treated areas.

What are the Benefits of Botox®?

Botox® has been found to be extremely useful in smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and firming the skin, resulting in a more rejuvenated appearance. Apart from its aesthetic properties, Botox® is also able to treat many other conditions, such as migraines, overactive bladder, and excessive perspiration.

What Botox® Results Should I Expect?

The treated lines and wrinkles will begin to fade between three to five days after your Botox® session. These results can last anywhere from four to six months. Because of the expiration dates mentioned above, it is recommended that touch-up treatments be scheduled every four to six months to maintain results. However, every individual is different and you may find that you need fewer treatments over time to reach the same outcome. It is recommended that you discuss a customized treatment plan with Dr. Martin and adjust it accordingly.

What’s the Recovery from Botox® Like?

Botox® treatments typically last 15-30 minutes. Since this treatment is done in our office, there is no downtime associated with the injections, and you will be able to return to work and normal activities immediately. Dr. Martin will provide you with any special instructions post-treatment, if necessary.
