Dr. Martin’s Guide to Blepharoplasty

A great first impression starts with the eyes and you don’t want to mess that up before you even say hello. Droopy, saggy eyelids make you look perpetually bored, tired and disinterested. Looking to brighten up your look? Consider blepharoplasty your eye-saving solution. Dr. Martin wanted to share with you his all-encompassing guide to eyelid surgery, so you know exactly what to expect before you even schedule your consultation.

What is Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can benefit the upper and lower eyelids by reducing excess skin and fatty deposits for a naturally bright and youthful appearance. Upper blepharoplasty focuses on sagging or drooping eyelids, and fine lines and wrinkles surrounding the outer portion of the eyes. Lower blepharoplasty, on the other hand, focuses more on removing fatty deposits that cause bags under the eyes. While upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed separately, they are often performed together to give the patient an overall more refreshed appearance.

What Can I Expect from Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is performed as an outpatient surgery by Dr. Richard Martin. During upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made in the natural folds of the skin where excess tissue is removed from the area. During lower eyelid surgery, a small incision along the lower lash line is made and the fatty deposits that cause the appearance of under-eye bags are removed. The whole surgery will take anywhere between one and three hours, depending on which procedure you choose to have done.

Is Eyelid Surgery Painful?

Generally, no, eyelid surgery is not very painful. You will be under anesthesia during your surgery to minimize any pain or discomfort during the procedure. After your blepharoplasty, it is normal to experience some swelling and bruising in the surgery site. This typically resolves on its own, about a week after your eyelid surgery. You also may experience irritation or dryness of the eyes after your procedure. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and their normal daily activities just one week after their eyelid surgery.

Blepharoplasty Recovery Tips

The best recovery tip we can give you is to follow Dr. Martin’s post-operative care instructions as thoroughly as possible. This means staying on top of icing your treated area, changing your dressings only when instructed to do so and following up with Dr. Martin at the appropriate times.

How Much is Blepharoplasty?

Realistically, the cost of your blepharoplasty is going to depend on whether you choose to get upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery or a combination of the two in addition to the extent of your treatment necessary to produce your desired results. To help you pay for your procedure, we offer financing options that allow you to break up your bill into smaller, more manageable monthly payments.
